NBC’s World of Dance, Season 1, Week THREE – LIVE Blog
Three weeks….and three weeks AGT has made me cry actual tears. God, such a sap I am. I’m sure there’s manipulation involved, but it’s so nice and subtle that I don’t even care. Now let’s see if WoD can do the same thing for me. If nothing else, Derek will be HOT. 😉
Hot new opening. All three judges look stunning.
So this is the last week of the qualifiers? That’s surprising. I thought it would go for another week or two, since they have ten weeks.
Jabbawockeez!! Excellent every time I’ve seen them. Will they hold up against people we’ve seen thus far?
Nice Jammies. They’re doing great, but is part of the thing their costumes? Are they better than some of the previous groups? I’m not sure…and that’s why we have duels. 🙂
Yeah, NeYo pointed out the difference well. As did Derek…Derek misses the isolations. I’m torn. Jennifer is right that it was a risk. Don’t really agree with Jen – I wouldn’t say “kill it”. But definitely excellent. Trouble is they’ve set their own bar too high.
Score was fair in my mind. Very possible that they are holding back for the duels, knowing they will get through on their name.
The what? Sisters? Mihacevich Sisters. Okay.
wow. Loved that. Love the trio contemporary idea. Beautiful. Well choreographed to the music.
Good score. My favorite contemporary I’ve seen on this show. Different. Loved the sync.
Love Jenna – I like how she’s always wrapped around the families while their people are dancing.
Now we’re doing some speed qualifying:
Boys of Temecula
Kyntay
Kyle Van Newkirk
Chapkis Dance Family
Pasion
Oh Derek…please flamenco me some more… :::sigh:::
The Posse – all crying when they’re done. Lovely girls. And they go through as well.
Swing Latino is next…fell a bit behind getting all those quick flashes of dances!!
Holy crap this is fast! A couple sync problems just because of the insane speed. And they almost dropped a girl. That was crazy!!
And they’re through! Good for them!
Next up is Ian Eastwood and the Young Lions. Love this song and I love Ian, the lead. He’s got some kind of “it” factor. Love the style and they’re really executing. That had swag.
Not an overly complicated routine, but I think that’s what I loved about it. NeYo nailed it – Bruno Mars taller whiter brother. Thank god they made it through – I really liked them. There’s something to be said for simple swag.
Vibration – belly dancers, didn’t make it.
801 Squad – didn’t make it.
Trent Jeray – didn’t make it just barely.
DNA – Ukraine ballroom dancers. He whips his hair like Derek used too – better stop or he’ll have Derek’s neck.
Channeling Len Goodman – a bit frantic for me, and a couple messy bit. Mostly one spot exiting a lift, I think. But really, really good overall.
Agree with NeYo, they were working a bit hard on the lifts. He pretty much called it. HA! JLo saw the mishap too. It wasn’t just me. Curious to see Derek’s score on this one as the ballroom dancer
Huh. He scored it pretty high. Maybe he understood the difficulty very well.
Are they going to end this show AGAIN with a contemporary dancer? Jesus, producer and editors!! Mix it up! Contemporary is not the center of the universe!!
Eva Igo… This little girl is TOUGH!! Not overwrought, not flailing. Holy crap. That’s the best contemporary of all the single contemporary dancers and she’s probably the youngest. She was amazing. Fantastic.
But I still have a huge gripe with this show!! Contemporary is not the only style that makes an impact, that has a depth of emotion, that makes you feel. It’s ridiculous that they seem to think so. They are falling into the SYTYCD trap of placing that style above all others when it is in fact rare that we get to see non-flailing, overwrought contemporary dance.
Greetings fellow dance lovers.
The Jabawockeez did what they do best. Precise and synchronized isolations combined with lyrical flow. I’ve always been impressed that even though they wear full face masks while dancing, they always manage to convey personality through their bodies, instead of relying on facial projection.
Always been a fan of Jabbawockeez. Always loved their style. I thought their score was too low. I think 89 would have been fairer. The first part was really cool, very creative.
I LOVED Swing Latino! So freaking fast, precise and FUN. That throw the girl across the head so she lands upside down clinging to her partner move was amazing.
So disappointed they didn’t show Kyle’s whole tap dance, but, I hope they show more of him in the future. So far tonight, my fave is The Jabawockeez.
Wow! Eva really impressed me. Her dance wasn’t a predictable, angsty Contemporary. It had power and strength. She was in charge, and you better believe it.
And the show just ended with another contemporary. Sigh! I still enjoyed it immensely.
I understand why some dances were not shown in full, what with the limited episodes/air time the show has. Just disappointed. Would have loved to see the full Derek Flamenco dance-off. Or they could have added a fourth week for the qualifiers. But what do I know about shows? LOL!
My favorite of the night were Mihacevich Sisters followed by the Jabbawockeez. Thank you for live blogging, Princess H!
Whoops! Sorry, forgot to add Swing Latino and Eva to my list of faves for week 3. Swing Latino was fun. Some sync issues, but man! I was holding my breath half the time they were performing. And Eva’s is my favorite solo Contemporary dance and dancer. Hers was powerful and inspirational. It felt like she was channeling Wonder Woman in her dance.
As for the sisters, loved their sync! They were so attuned to one another’s body, breathing, and movement. So lovely to watch. Loved how all the dancers paid close attention to Jabbawockeez. I think those dancers are fans of the group. As Jenna called them, they were legends. Loved that they said that they see the need to keep growing.
I just finished catching up on all the dances. I must say that while there are definitely some fantastic dancers on this show – overall it has been a let down for me. The production as a whole is a total mess. From the lighting to the camera angels and sound quality. It feels rushed at times and they unfortunately don’t show enough of the dance acts. I am also NOT liking Ne-yo as a judge. He doesn’t seem to know what he’s talking about most of the time and underscores dancers randomly and unfairly… so that he can come off as the harsh judge??? I’m loving Derek as a judge though! The majority of his commentary is fantastic, insightful and caring. I’m slightly baffled by some people that are saying he doesn’t have the credibility to judge? The two time Emmy winning choreographer and latin ballroom champion who has training in more dance styles than I can count? Yeah, okay LOL.
I really hope however that it will get better as the weeks go on and we get down to the duels and quarterfinals/semifinals and of course the finale! Sorry for my rambling… I really enjoy watching all things dance on TV and would really love for this show to succeed in the years to come but right now I’m still iffy on it, or at least the production and direction parts of it.
I liked Eva, but most of the other Contemporary routines we’ve seen so far we’re anything special to me. I also enjoyed Swing Latino, the brief clip we saw of Kyle, and most of the Hip-Hop routines.
I think the overt favoring of one type of thing is common on NBC shows, unfortunately. With WOD it seems to be Contemporary routines, and with this show’s outcome being decided by just the judges, I see a lot of that crowd making it far.
Oh, and I did like the Posse as well.
I’m not sure what more those judges expected from the jabbawockeez. The last time they saw them was probably on abdc nearly 10 years ago… You can’t expect someone to be the best AND always stay the same. They brought everything they’re known for: personality, technique, isolations, crazy synchronicity, creativity, fun, musicality – they always use the music so so well, humor, performance, presence and a whole lot of swag! What more did they expect?! Also, this is week 1, you can’t bring out everything on week 1. I was dancing along with them the whole time. Their performance was more impressive, fun & memorable than the kinjaz for me (which are also great & have 1 former jabbawockeez member in their crew btw), but because kinjaz are relatively knew, people don’t know them as well as the jbwkz, they’re more easily impressed by what they do…
There’s this perception than when a performance is more groovy that it is “lazy” or not very difficult, but they put a lot of different things in that number. So to see them get the scores they got was disappointing. I wish fans could vote for their favorites, scoring & judging is subjective. Maybe if the show is picked up for another season they’ll change the format a little.
By the way, did you know that the dancer in gray, Phil Tayag, is Bruno Mars’ choreographer? He’s been in some videos & stage performances…
Loved all of them last night except for the last two….who I think were overscored to be honest . Just not feeling them lol. The jabz killed it…but not their best routine.
I don’t know about this show, it feels like the more famous acts are there for stunt casting. I don’t think they are going to be around for the summer. Fikshun is signed on to be an All Star this season on SYTYCD, a show that’s looking great after they got rid of the children’s format and went back to their roots. Jaberwkz are an established vegas act, I think some of these acts are serving the Heather Morris purpose.
@Casanova – The whole show has been pre-taped, and was done back in February.
Just watched the Jabbawockeez performance, and it was interesting. It was a bit different from what we’ve seen in the past, but I thought I saw some Bruno Mars performance influence in that choreo. Their main choreographer has been choreographing for Bruno Mars, but I think Bruno Mars has a decent amount of input in the direction. I think you saw some of that fluidity in that routine.
Well, first I want to give a big shout-out and thank you to Miss Heidi and Vogue for giving us a fun forum to discuss the show. My faves were Eva and Swing Latin. Eva really wowed me with her ferocity and command of the stage – amazing for such a young dancer. Also loved Swing Latino with their speed and energy. But in terms of the format and production of the show, I’m not yet a fan. I feel like the graphics as background for the dancers are too bright, too busy, too much, too much. It is hard to concentrate on just the dancing with all the computerized distractions. I wish there were just a simple stage, like in the beginning days of SYTYCD. To me, the show seems like tons of glitz, lighting, & fancy camera angles. It feels very rushed and we see only snippets of some of the dances. Maybe it will get sorted out over time. As far as the judges are concerned, I do enjoy JLo as a judge, and also on American Idol. She seems fair, friendly and focused and not caught up with herself. I’m lukewarm about Neyo’s judging as he doesn’t seem to add much insight, although sometimes he shares a relevant comment. Derek’s judging commentary is right on target, for me. He starts off with something complimentary and then gives some terrific constructive advice or comment. Jenna is an adorable host and so supportive of the contestants and families. So, thanks again Miss Heidi & Vogue, and I look forward to seeing more of this show!
It’s been pre-taped way back in February? Geez I thought it was pre-taped maybe a month ago, some of the kids will have grown and look different LOL.. I am surprised spoilers haven’t ruined the outcome. Is the budget tight for this show? Lopez and the judges are wearing the same outfit 3 weeks in a row. Even pre-taped Family Fued lets Steve Harvey change for each episode.
Casanova #17 – Doubt the budget is tight if they got J Lo and a million dollar winning prize. I think the outfits being the same is just like it is for The Voice chair auditions. They ask the judges/coaches to wear the same thing so they can cut and edit different people in different episodes, and also a lot of the auditions were probably done on the same day anyway. You know they are going to have more than 6-8 acts audition in the same day back when they held them in January.
Derek has implied in a couple places that the actual result hasn’t been taped yet.
