World of Dance, Season 4 – Week Six Live Blog

The Duels!! I already suspect that I’m going to be mad before the end of the night. 🙂 We’ll see!!

T-minus 30 minutes!

Damn you, AGT….another week of crying at this dang show. The Spoken Word act that ended tonights AGT rivals Lin Manuel Miranda – I can give no higher compliment.

Apparently the big stage with the audience is the round AFTER the duels.

Twitch gets to pick who heads to redemption. I trust him more than Jennifer. 🙂 And maybe more than the other two as well. And apparently it’s the Upper Division going tonight. Not a fan of Jennifer’s outfit. Love Derek’s and Ne-yo’s though. Read more..

World of Dance, Season 4 – Week FIVE Live Blog

Can’t believe it’s week 5 already. Tonight is the call backs and only four teams are making it to the duels. I have no favorites, as I recall, in the call back group. That’s the problem of course – there’s not been anyone memorable yet this season. I hope the duels punch up the competition.

I also don’t think that this season is that markedly different from the previous ones – the qualifiers are the same as always, they just happen earlier in the dancers minds because they’re expecting producers, not the judges. It does sound like the duels have serious potential – if the judges are deciding the dance battles, then the contestants can’t pick who they perceive to be the weakest to try to eliminate them. But the judges need to not fall into the same trap – match them well and make them true battles. I guess we will see…

T-minus 29 minutes.

Damn, AGT – make me cry EVERY week.

Here we go – impress me people!! By the way, Love Jennifer’s hair and outfit.

The Rise is up first with my favorite white haired guy. 🙂 I haven’t kept track of how many acts are in each division – if I had I could probably predict what was going to happen.

They’re off to a great start. Derek just made a “mistake” face. They’re a tiny bit sloppy, but I love them.

Jennifer says it was compelling and she was impressed. Derek and Ne-Yo said they did better. And Ne-Yo loves my guy too. 🙂 He does bring the energy and he has some kind of crazy charisma. And he’s just so cute. They do comment that there’s still some need for a pop here and there. They are a sharp looking group. And the judges did say they nailed it. I’m rooting for them.

Project 21 ain’t going to cut it, they got the short edit and little discussion. Props were always bad on DWTS, but apparently they did okay. Even if they do make it through here, they’ll lose the duels.

Avante Gard is up next…did the outfits. Also get the short edit. Yeah I remember this group – I like they for how different they are. Different music choices, different movements.

Jennifer says much better than last time – the whole routine made sense. Derek says the dancing wasn’t as strong this time. Ne-Yo is with Derek. They went too far in one way. They lost two judges and only gained Jennifer.

CBACTION is up next. These are the guys who had an injury right before dancing. They’ve adjusted more to being short a guy. Hopefully tightened it up.

They are getting a very short edit as well. So short I can’t really comment. Derek says there are still moments lacking impact. Ne-Yo liked it better, said they were quality dancers. Jennifer thinks they’re good, strong dancers, but she’s still not sure.

Next up, another girl group, The Difference. Highly edited again, but I”m liking what I see, seems tight.

Jennifer says they have heart and were better than last time. Ne-Yo likes the story. Derek still needs more but he loves them as dancers.

Man, they are zooming through the dancers and it’s not even 20 after the hour.

GRVMNT is up next…do I remember them from the first time around?? They’re cute, but I don’t remember.  They’re getting a longer edit, much more discussion before they dance.

Very tight. Nice sync. Good energy. Derek is moving in a positive way. 🙂 Yah, they’re killing it. Just the tightest group of the night. And the bridge was great. Well done. Loved the ending as well.

Jennifer says bring that EVERY time. Much better. They still have a ways to go, she says. They killed it.  Derek loved the transitions (agreed). Ne-Yo points out the youngest dude – that’s the energy they need. Jennifer says whoever comes up front is whoever is killing it the most.

Pumpfidence is up next – they got highly edited in the first round, I don’t expect this one to be much better.  There’s just not much to this in terms of actual dancing. Their sync wasn’t that great.

Jennifer says the choreography was better than last time. Derek says there were times they weren’t together, but better than the first time. Ne-Yo says that they have a long way to go, but better than the first time.  Jennifer makes the comment about them needing to be able to compete with everyone else.  I agree.

Derek is too funny. They all are, actually. This show has given me a whole new appreciation for Jennifer and she needs to thank Derek and Ne-Yo. 🙂

“Stars are meant to shine, Derek” LOL

Show Stoppers up next! That’s yellow. Wow, sharp. I like that they’re all women doing this style of dance.. Slight misalignment there, but the sync is good. Not sure there were enough wow moments

Jennifer and Ne-Yo say they are a lot stronger. Jennifer says they need more surprises. Derek says they started strong, but by the end they had stayed in the same zone.

Latin dancers 305 are up next.  Are there any ballroom/latin acts on the show this year? Not many.

Go Derek, go! 🙂 That’s a whole lot of dancers. That they dance so well as a team is amazing. Dang, this is fast. Good shapes, good overall dancing. I feel like there might be too many of them.

Derek thought it was fun and the song was so hype. He’s on the fence. Jennifer says much better, could see the dancing better. Not sure they’re up to par the whole time. Ne-yo points out one girl and tells everyone else to match her level.

By my count, there is only one team left and they edited all but two or three, so this one ought to be good. Maybe?

Derek the little brother. 🙂 He is a photo bomber, for sure.

The Young Cast are up next. Junior team from Canada. They’ve been trying since season 2 – hope they make it.

Like the opening – like a flower. First actual lift of the night? Still a bit low energy but they sync is good and they’re pretty tight. And right when I say that they go double speed and it’s pretty effective. Ending similar to the beginning and that was good as well.

Jen has ninja vibes. All three judge say “much better”. Formation were beautiful, felt strong, clean connected – all by Jennifer. Ne-Yo loved the intro picture as well. Derek the downer says he doesn’t want to see the lift – they saw them set up. Needs to come out of nowhere as a surprise. But judges over all are very positive. I think they should make it.

Okay, I think they’ll pick The Rise, The Young Cast, GRVMNT and…..Show Stoppers?  Not sure about that last one, but that’s my guess right now.

They judges do a So You Think You Can Dance style elimination discussion.

Show Stoppers, Young Cast, The Difference all in the room together and only one of these three are going to make it.  And that makes me wrong with one guess. But I was right with The Young Cast!!

Next, Pumpfidence are in the room with Avante Gard Collective and both groups get eliminated.

Next to enter the room are The Rise and 305.  Jennifer says they’re not sure 305 are ready – same for The Rise. Hmmmm…

Both groups make it through!  305 is a surprise, but I’m very happy for them.

Only one spot left – CBACTION, Project 21 and GRVMNT are the last three standing. GRVMNT was on my list. And I was right!!

So the four groups making it through are:

GRVMNT
305
The Rise
The Young Cast

I called three out of the four – not too bad. Next week the duels!! I’m looking forward to it – how about you??

World of Dance, Season 4 – Week FOUR Live Blog

Week 4 already!! T-minus 30 minutes till showtime. Let’s hope that the talent is higher quality this week. I saw lots of commentary that the dancing wasn’t up to par last week – I tend to agree, but every season has a week like that. Hopefully, last week was the only week. 🙂

It’s time….love that lead in with the very handsome Derek. 🙂 Final batch of dancers in the qualifiers.

Up first is Geometri Variable – I posted their video earlier in the week. They are amazing. And they’re funny too. 🙂

I found them mesmerizing and exhausting in a good way. I love French. Read more..

World of Dance, Season 4 – Week THREE Live Blog

Week three already!! Let’s goooooooo!! T-minus 20 minutes…

That Derek/JLo “You Can Really Dance” video still cracks me up. 🙂

And I love Derek and Ne-Yo’s chemistry.

First up is Keagan – 13 years old from Oklahoma! And of course she’s a contemporary dancer. What are they teaching kids these days if other kids don’t know where Oklahoma is?

Boy, she’s extremely bendy…JLo will likely rave but I’m not feeling that much from her other than gymnastics. She’s alright…very bendy.

Ne-Yo wants to know when she learned to be bendy. Derek thinks she’s non-Gumby like. 🙂 Derek apparently called her an alien. 🙂 JLo says it’s about the story and says they didn’t see all of it, but of course she thinks there’s more there.

Of course they all say yes. I just want to see more from contemporary – it all looks the same anymore.

Oh, yes, I want to see Derek be bendy. Yes please.

You know, this season really isn’t all that different, since they go straight to the duels after this round. Only difference is that there is no audience and they’re in a warehouse (a very upscale warehouse). I’m sure all the dancers had to make it through a couple rounds of producers prior to this round, so…no difference.

Little Salsa babies?? Wheee! Antonio and Maria – they’re 11 and 13. And they get severely edited, which bugs the hell out of me. Derek thinks they haven’t clicked yet. Ne-Yo says they need more maturity. Both men give them no’s. And they go home. 🙁

Next dapper tappers from the Netherlands. Avant Garde – apparently they all have their own, different style. Heavily edited and I can’t tell if I like it or not. Ne-Yo is a yes, Jennifer is a no, and Derek says “call backs”.

Next is Chibi Unity – a fusion group from Japan…and they go crazy to see the judges. 🙂

They didn’t expect the judges and they are really excited – per their interpreter.

I love this damn song. I dig the head nods. They seem to be a fusion of contemporary and hip hop. I think I like it. Not as clean as some groups, but I like them. I say call backs.

Jennifer says the choreography was a stand out. Derek felt the emotion, but the big set up in the middle didn’t pay off. I would agree. Ne-Yo says it started a little slow (disagree), but once the energy picked up he was thoroughly impressed.

Ne-Yo – Yes
Derek – Yes

They either edited Jennifer out or she didn’t vote since the two men put the group through. Ne-Yo tells them to take the notes.

Derek and Ne-Yo are the ultimate partners. 🙂

Josh and Erica are an Urban Dance duo. Erica was on last season and didn’t make it through because she lacked chemistry. So now she has a new partner that she’s also dating, so of course they have chemistry. Yeah, you might think that, but it’s not always true. Good luck!

Not a fan of the outfits. Shallow, I know. Derek recognizes Erica – I’m sure it has nothing to do with how much she looks like his girlfriend.

Someone tell me the difference between “urban” and “hip hop”? This is slower, but it looks like contemporary fused with hip hop. He seems sharper than she is. Yeah, making that face don’t make you “urban” dude.

JLo says they have “amazing” chemistry, they have some great moves and they’re extremely powerful.

Ne-Yo says they’re quality dances, but everyone here is quality dancers. There needs to be something more. He hit so hard that it softened her – absolutely agree.

Derek says they have a lot of tools, but they need to utilize all the tools they have and they could have even a better formula.

Ne-Yo says call backs.
Jennifer says yes (of course).
Derek says yes as well. I’m with Ne-Yo on this one. They were good, but I’m still waiting to be blown away.

So…next up is…the Break Ninjas! I like their rules. 🙂 Work hard, have fun and…I forgot the third one. They’re cute. Little dudes are so cute. Ten years old.

I didn’t know Jennifer is from the Bronx. :::smirk:::

Hand stans into some serious break dancing. Pretty tight. Nice leap. This is pretty fun. A little sloppy during babalu’s solo. So cute, though. Severely edited this dance as well. This one of the things that seriously bugs about this show.

Jennifer and Ne-Yo are somewhat raving. Derek throws a bit of cold water on it.

Derek and Ne-Yo say no – suggest that they come back next year. They do need work, but so cute.

Next up: a group that’s been here twice before and haven’t made it. First time they’ve made it to this stage. Canadians under the name of the Young Cast. they are pretty tight. Great in sync. Like their lines and their diagonals. That second diagonal, a couple of the guys got out of line to do something else. Made it seem sloppy.

Jennifer questions if they can compete, wonders if they can do more than formations. The other two judges agree. Ne-Yo wants more stacatto. Jennifer would like more dancing, less pictures, more groove and more musicality.

Derek says Yes.
Jennifer says Call Back, and Ne-Yo agrees.

Kinda weird how their comments don’t seem to mimic their decision.

The Judges getting a group photo taken – Derek is hot, as usual. 🙂

MDC3 is up next – a contemporary trio (interesting). One of the mom’s had breast cancer and they talk about how hard it was. She beat it, but then got it again. I can’t imagine. The kids try to be positive around her.

Wow nice lift in rehearsal. They’ve been dancing together for 7 years as a trio – that’s amazing and unusual.

Oooo..complicated first hold. This is different. I like it. Great lifts. And different ones with a trio. And that last bit was amazing.

Jennifer says it was very clear to her, all three are super strong. Derek loves the transitions, how connected and different they are. Ne-Yo felt it.

Jennifer says yes.
Derek says yes.
Ne-Yo doesn’t say a word or they edit it out for time since they only need two.

Best contemporary act so far this season. Because it’s different – they showed me different lifts and combinations/transitions from what I’ve seen before. Thank god. Contemporary is getting so overdone, as is hip hop at times. That’s the curse of a show like this one.

Show Stoppers from Miami are up next with Jazz/Funk. This looks like it could be interesting. Outfits are kinda different. I like the all women teams – I root for them.

Great tribute to JLo and her representing of Latinas. They’re off to a great start. the fact that there are a ton of them is working for them. Great sync.Sexier than the male groups, in my opinion. they got some Salsa in there as well. It’s slowing down a bit in the middle towards the end.

Jennifer says they need to hit it harder, and thinks it might be because of their outfits. Says they have to feel the emotion. They have the passion but they have to get the skill up there. Ne-Yo agrees. He adds that the name sets them up. Derek says the choreography was kind of one-note (not his words).

Ne-Yo says he’s on the fence, says Call Back.
Derek also says call back, and Jennifer agrees.

Well, that’s the show. Thoughts? I was only truly impressed by the contemporary trio, MDC3, but I also liked the Show Stoppers, although I understand the judges comments. Everyone else was just okay – and since they eliminated quite a few this episode that’s to be expected. Hopefully it will build next week!

NBC Renews World of Dance for a Fourth Season!

From Deadline…

NBC is bringing back two of its hit alternative series for another go-round. The network has renewed Jennifer Lopez-led World of Dance for a fourth season and America’s Got Talent: The Champions for a second season.

A strong ratings performer, World of Dance has averaged a 1.2 rating in adults 18-49 and 4.8 million viewers overall in Live+ seven-day Nielsens season-to-date. That’s up 33% vs NBC’s year-ago 18-49 average in the Sunday 8-10 PM timeslot. The series also delivers a strong upscale audience, with a 115 index among adults 18-49 living in homes with $100K+ incomes and a 118 among adults 18-49 with four or more years of college.

World of Dance is also a top digital performer, generating 22% of its live+ 35 day plus digital 18-49 rating from nonlinear sources, the #1 biggest percentage among NBC alternative series.

Can A Contemporary Dancer or Group Ever Win World of Dance??

Or a ballroom dancer or tappers, for that matter. As I noted in my final live blog post for the season, hip hoppers have always won, either in pairs or groups.

Season 1 – Les Twins
Season 2 – The Lab
Season 3 – The Kings

The Kings describe themselves as Bolly Hop but there is little Bollywood and lots of hip hop in most of their dances. Don’t get me wrong – I LOVE the Kings and I’m not disputing their win at all. Their routines were fantastic, they always got me excited, and so on. I might even go so far as to say that the other finalists’ routines didn’t quite live up to The Kings final routine.

Can any routine ever hope to live up to the excitement of a routine like The Kings final routine? As Hip Hop, or Bolly Hop, it’s always going to be high energy. Very high energy. Contemporary, most of the time, is NOT high energy.

Also need to say that this is not really a critique of the judging, per se. I think the judges, over all, do a great job in a very difficult situation.

So, what do you do to fix it, if it’s even broke?? I think I need to go back and watch the winner and runner up from each season. First up, Les Twins.

Coming in second to Les Twins was Eva Igo, followed very closely by Swing Latino. Side note, in Season 1, three finalists each danced twice. I’ve included (I think) their final performance.

Now, both of these routines are excellent. I actually loved Swing Latino and the final scores were VERY close. When you averaged the two dances together, Les Twins ended with a 93.8, Eva with a 93.7 and Swing Latino had a 93.2. A razor thin margin.

Season 2 was won by The Lab. I LOVE the Lab and I was rooting for them the whole way, no lie. But…who was the runner up?? Michael Dameski, another soloist doing contemporary. Now, I was not rooting for Michael. At the time I didn’t think he was all that and preferred either the Lab or Charity & Andres. But a pattern is emerging, ain’t it? 🙂 Here’s the Lab’s final dance:

The Lab’s choreographer is VERY smart. They took the hip hop vibe, co-opted the contemporary emotions and came up with a dance that makes me weepy to this day. And there is no arguing with the synchronicity and the style of this dance. That’s a winner. Here’s Michael’s final routine.

Another good routine. No doubt. But does it stand up against The Lab?? And if not…why not? Of course, sometimes the final routines aren’t all equal and it comes down to contemporary versus hip hop. I would argue that Michael’s final routine didn’t deserve the win, compared to The Lab. It didn’t touch me, there didn’t seem to be anything special about it when compared to contemporary in general. That’s the way it goes sometimes and it brings up another question that I will discuss below.

Now, season three just happened, but let’s re-watch the dances with a couple days distance (and maybe clearer heads in some cases – yes, I saw ya’ll tweeting Derek telling him his scoring was crap). First, The Kings:

Now, don’t just watch the faces of the dancers and the judges – look at the faces on Zack Everhart and the other Unity LA dancers. They knew IN THE MOMENT after seeing that dance that they lost. There is no question – that dance was a work of art. Theirs was as well…but how do you compete with what the Kings did as a contemporary dancer? Here is Unity LA’s final performance:

This was a beautiful dance, a Monet like one of the judges said. What was wrong with it? Not a damn thing.

So now, essentially, you have three hip hop winners and three contemporary runners up. Coincidence? Probably not.

What are the differences between the winner and the runner(s) up? Well, there are a few things that are markedly different:

  • Many times it’s a younger dancer competing against people with more life experience to influence their dance. Dance is about emotion and your emotions are (usually) richer as you age.
  • Contemporary, as typically (way too typically) done, is slower, softer, beautiful, without the uptempo to get your heart pumping and the crazy tricks to make you hold your breath.
  • Hip Hop doesn’t have RULES; ballroom and, to a lesser extent, contemporary certainly do. One wrong step in a Tango and Derek will see it. One sickly foot in contemporary and Derek AND JLo will see it for sure. In Hip Hop, you pretty much have to fall over for it to be seen as an error.
  • Props. Lots and lots of props. Ballroom doesn’t do it. Contemporary rarely does it. Hip Hop?? All. The. Time.  If you look at Les Twins final, or The Labs second to last dance…many props and used extremely well.
  • Jennifer likes to talk about narrative, and sometimes it seems that the emotion of contemporary is a substitute for a narrative. All three of the Hip Hop winners have a strong narrative or story going on.  Most of the time, I watch contemporary or ballroom and can’t see the narrative. THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH NOT HAVING A STORY OR A NARRATIVE…but I do find it interesting that all three winners DO. It certainly seems to help.

That’s quite a few differences between winners and losers. The combination of them might make the difference. So, between Les Twins and Eva Igo – were the winners deserving? Well, all winners are deserving for one reason or another, but I didn’t (at the time) see Les Twins as better than Eva. Up until the finale, I had seen them as rather one-note. Eva seemed to have more range and she was many years their junior. Michael Dameski versus the Lab? Well, I thought the Lab were firing on all cylinders all season long – I think that win was clear cut. Much more clear cut than Season 1. Unity LA versus The Kings?? Again, I thought the Kings had the better finale dance…but if Unity LA had done their divisional final dance on the final would it have been closer? Probably. But they might not have won their division.

When thinking about the final routines and how it can make or break a competitor…should everything hinge on the finale night, or should there be more attention paid to the work they did across the whole season?? Did they grow and evolve? Were they fantastic on night one and then fade away? Should there be a scoring category that takes into account growth or lack thereof?? Or should the scores of the entire season be averaged?

It’s hard to ignore that hip hop has won all three seasons, and really, season 1 is the only time I take issue with that. So what can be done? What more can they do to level the playing field? Will contemporary EVER win?? For the love of god, Ballroom is the hardest and gets no love – not fair, IMO. Most of the time, I get the impression that Jennifer, at least, prefers contemporary to most other styles. And Derek is going to go tougher on his specialty while Ne-Yo and Jennifer are relatively clueless on ballroom/latin. So, what do you think? What can be done? And does the show REALLY need fixing or did it work out the right way every time??
