World of Dance Season 2! WEEK 7 Live Blog!!

I’ll likely to a post on this tomorrow or the next day, but as tonight is the last day of qualifiers, I thought I would look to see who’s left to be shown on the show. They have NOT done what they did last season – there’s been no “fast forward” through several acts each week who either go through or don’t. And there have only been three acts who got no package at all. The most they’ve done is edit some of the dances last week. I find that highly annoying, but I’ll be able to live with it if they DON’T edit in the later rounds of the show. Anyway, here’s where we stand going into tonight:

  • Out of 74 groups/dancers announced, 35 have yet to dance. Since they only get to 6 or 7 per week, there are going to be a LOT that don’t see the light of day.
  • 11 upper teams have qualified
  • 7 uppers have qualified
  • 7 junior teams have qualified
  • 11 juniors have qualified

Hmmm…..that seems rather….symmetrical.  So are we going to see mainly uppers and junior teams tonight to balance it out? Or are they not being so obvious this season? We already know we’re seeing Luka and Jenalyn from last season (Upper) tonight and odds are good they’ll go through.  From what I can tell, the others performing tonight are mainly junior teams and uppers soooo….

T-minus 30 minutes to show time!!

Okay, here we go. Let’s see some great dancing!!

Haha…JLo says Derek is “still good” to have kids at 32. 🙂

First group is a whole bunch of cute kids who have “faces – this kids are going to kill me. Hilarious. they are the CubCakes, a junior crew from …

Orange County California.

They’re quite good, but I’m not sure how I feel about that first little one kind of sexing it up. And they might be over playing the face, having watched the The Lab last season. But dang, they’re great.

They judges totally go for it…I don’t blame them. They were fun, great kids. JLo: “makings” of a really great dance crew. Not sure what that means.

Derek: “World of Cute”. LOL. NeYo doesn’t know how to judge them cuz they are so cute. Derek is raving and talking about how great their support system of each other is.

Judges: 80, 84, and 85 (Derek, Ne-Yo, Jennifer) for an average of 83. Ridiculously low score from Derek – I would love to hear more of what he was basing that on. Perhaps TOO cute??

Luka and Jenalyn up next! Very excited to see what they do this season.

Massive improvement from last season, so far. Lifts are still incredible. Derek is digging it. Okay, that had fewer tricks than last season, but they danced way more, far more polished, very lovely.

JLo loved it, very complimentary. Derek picking on Luka’s body roll (he’s correct), but other than that he loves them. Ne-Yo says he has a “straining” face, Derek and Jlo disagree.

Scores: 87, 86 and 88 (Derek, JLo, Ne-Yo) for an average of 87 – making it through easily. As well they should.

Some arguing between Derek/JLo and Ne-Yo about the straining face which leads to Derek trying to get Ne-Yo to lift him. I’m not sure if that would help. 🙂

Ohhhhh….a tapping crew!! This excites me. The Jam Project, an upper team. They are a rock and roll type group of tappers. This excites me.

JLo says it takes a certain type of gentleman to do tap (you’re sitting next to one) – wonder if she still thinks that. I like the idea of a tap crew, and these guys are pretty damn good. Good amount of sync with still some individuality. I think I dug it, but perhaps not as much as I wanted to.

JLo thinks it’s hard to really appreciate it, they disagree. Derek says they’re selling him. Derek tells the audience how very difficult it was to do what they did and had a suggestion to make it stand out more. Jennifer wants them to bring all the legacy of the art form to it. Interesting.

Scores: 82, 83 and 84 (Ne-Yo, Jennifer, Derek) for an average of 83 and they’re on to the next round. This makes me happy.

Jennifer…how do I tell you this without hurting your feelings….DEREK DOES EVERYTHING. I’m not sure there’s a style of dance he hasn’t at least tried (and possibly done on DWTS) at this point. You might have to work hard to find something he hasn’t done on TV. Okay…I don’t remember a polka. 🙂

Marinspired from Los Angeles is up next – this is the male contemporary duo that’s been getting a lot of play (and a lot of bigotry) on twitter. I thought they were pretty amazing. “Let’s just get to being people.” Amen, brother.

I appreciate any contemporary that is not flaily, and they do some pretty amazing lifts. Great musicality. The one risk I see is that they played it a little too light at the beginning. Okay…excellent. I just love the musicality.

JLo says they are so strong and it was so awesome. Derek loved the turns, thought the movement was abstract and beautiful. Ne-Yo says the lack of clean makes it great. Very intentionally, if you look at their hair and outfits. Definite choice.

Scores: 90, 88, 96 (Derek, Ne-Yo, Jennifer) for an average of 91.3 – great job. Of course going to the duels. I agree with JLo….they are cute. 🙂

Alysa and Joseph are up next – Upper couple doing contemporary to a song that talks about their relationship.

Coming out with books and school costumes…shades of Keone and Mari. In fact, it starts off VERY like a Keone and Mari routine. I wonder if they choreographed. Great sync. I think they have the personal chemistry and humor of K/M too!! Delightful.

OMG…JLo just copied my “delightful” and my K/M comment. Ne-Yo says he loves when it feels real. He also says he feels like he’s seen it (I agree). Derek loved how theatrical it was, the isolations, etc. Derek wants to know if it will be competitive – JLo says yes. (And we all know she’ll do what she has to to make them win if she so desires…)

Scores: 92, 94 and 86 (Ne-Yo, Jennifer, Derek) for an average 90.7.

Next up: The Gentlemen, juniors from Fairfield, CA. Pretty tight boys on the hip hop!! Very well done and giving JLo a flower never hurts. Jlo said it felt like two brothers dancing on the street, tells them to take it to the stage level. Derek likes the swag, groove and charisma.

Scores 81, 79 and 79 for a 79.7, so they won’t advance to the next round. Sad for them, but they do need to step it up.

They are really blasting through the dances now. Slow down!! I can tell they’re really sped it up because of how hard it is to blog all of a sudden. 🙂

Dragon House – isn’t this the group that has all the poppers and lockers (including Cyrus) from SYTYCD. And they all call themselves members of Dragon House? Ne-Yo is not terribly impressed, needs more. JLo likes their sync, but the in between moments were lacking. Derek says they had great moments but it wasn’t consistent.

Scores: 79, 80, 81 for an average of 80 which means they just squeak through!! That’s surprising from that crew, because they have always killed it on SYTYCD.

Judges having the “artistic athlete” discussion again, talking about doing more than dancing to keep in shape.

Next up is a junior team that works out and talks about having big quads. They’re all tiny but muscular. They are Quad Squad for obvious reasons. 🙂 Great formations, great spins, great sync. Fell to of it a bit there in the middle. But in general they are killing it.

Derek is talking their language, loves them. Ne-Yo loving them spins like I mentioned. Jennifer calls them mind blowing. Ne-Yo trying to get his leg up there (hint: he can’t :-)). Jennifer says they’re a great team.

Scores: 86, 90, 91 (Derek, Jennifer, Ne-Yo) for an average of 89 – through to the duels!!

TWO NIGHTS next week – Tuesday is the end of the duels, Wednesday is the first night of the duels!! I saw in numerous places that this was the last night of the duels, but I guess they decided to give the 20-some dancer(s) another chance to be seen.

‘World Of Dance’ Season 2, Week Six Qualifiers – The Performance Videos

What a show again! If you missed it, below are the performances that qualified. The Rock Company was my very fave. Creative, moving, and so powerful! I loved DNA too!

World of Dance Season 2! WEEK 6 Live Blog!!

Okay, I think we’re back to normal after a repeat last week?? As for me – BEWARE!! I’ve been awake since 1 am (work life is hell) and I’ve had wine. It’s like a double whammy. 🙂 Super punchy and it’s very possible that I could fall asleep during the commercials. My *eyes* hurt.

Here we go!!

First up, some familiar faces from last season – DNA. He’s the one who got picked on a bit for not being strong enough for the lifts they were attempting. Curious to see if he’s done some strength training.

Opening is very impactful. Excellent. Gorgeous. I think they’ve modified their routine a bit to avoid the strength issue although they still have crazy good lifts. EXCELLENT routine.

JLo and Ne-yo both comment on his bigger muscles. Derek likes that he took responsibility. He loves her legs – I agree, she was amazing as well.

Scores: 85, 89 and 89 for an average of 87.7. They’re going through and rightfully so!!

As of right now there are 41 acts that we haven’t seen yet. I’m still wondering when they’re going to cut to the chase like they did last season. Of course, last season there were quite a few acts that we never saw. Interesting to see how they proceed this season!

What are the judges talking about when we come back from commercial? No idea. I must be tired cuz I’m not following it.

Next up…guys in hockey uniforms?? Am I delusional? No. This is Brotherhood – Upper team from Vancouver, Canada.

Wow. Super tight opening. and there’s 10 of them. Not easy. Love that linked up move. Oh and bringing the sticks in is risky. Using the whole stage is awesome. I feel like they got edited a bit more than previous acts.

Derek is digging them although he has some commentary on the props – be careful they don’t go to far. Ne-Yo wanted more props and for them to be careful with their faces. JLo thinks they started a bit slow and that they’re missing an “it” factor. Not sure I agree with her. I liked them!!

Scores: 85, 81 and 75 (Derek, Ne-Yo, JLo) for an average of 80.3 – barely squeaked through!! JLo kinda low balling. Odd.

Whenever we get to the end of the Qualifiers, I will do a big recap/summary. Anything in particular you want to see?

We have a youngster up next who is talking about her boyfriend breaking up with her. I don’t think you could pay me to go back to that age. So freakin’ hard. What is this child’s name? She’s a junior named Vivian Ruiz. From Miami, dancing contemporary, cuz that’s what you do.

Great control. Not too flail-y. She’s kinda interesting. Great feet. Geez, WoD, why are we editing the acts suddenly.

Derek asking her what the routine was about. She talks heart break. Girl, trust me – it gets better. Derek commiserating. 🙂 Talks about writing love letters. He points out her off balance moment – I agree, I noted it as well.

JLo feeling the pain and relates. Says she does a good job. Ne-Yo talking about pain and not out running it.

Scores: 83, 84, 82 for an average of 83 – she’s going through!!

Derek tells the story that his fans have heard before from when he was 16 and writing love letters, dropping water on the paper to make it look like he was crying. Ne-Yo scoffing – dude, I’ve heard this story 4 times now. Real deal. 🙂

By far, they haven’t show the Junior teams the most. There’s still a ton of those on the list who haven’t aired yet. I wonder if they just weren’t good enough to air??

D’Angelo back with the Untouchables. He was on last year with Amanda as a ballroom dancer. He’s Ruby’s sister – we saw her in week 4 or 5 – she killed it. Don’t get carried away, dad. The finals aren’t that easy. The Untouchables are a Junior group dancing…salsa??

Great start. Lots of tricks. Great sync. Might be too much going on here. Eh, losing a bit of sync there in the middle. Pretty tight towards the end. Great routine all in all, IMO.

JLo loving them and their outfits and the latino energy. She says they’re different. Really? Okay. Ne-Yo commenting on the business that I mentioned. Derek talking about how D’angelo recruited an army (in a funny way) and is talking technique.

Scores: 87, 89, 90 for an average of 88.7 – going through on a nice high score. Derek scored them very well. Of course, he’s most qualified to score that group.

Derek, why you so handsome?? 🙂

Good versus “World of Dance good”.

Next up ST Kingz from Japan. Looks like a Broadway group. But they say “Hip hop/comedy”. Okay. Great song, and they are kind of amusing. Better yet, they’re decent dancers. Once again, an edited routine. I suspect every time I say that they are going to lose a duel.

Derek says it took too long to get to the dancing. Ne-Yo says that it was technique versus showmanship. JLo wanting them to go to another level and dig in. Judges not raving for sure.

Scores: 79, 78, 80 – not enough to make it through with an average of 79. I would agree that they need tougher choreography.

Nest up is a very familiar couple from Derek and Julianne’s MOVE Live on Tour – Zack and Ashley both danced with Derek and Julianne. Finally, a couple dancers that acknowledge that. Talking about Derek the energizer bunny. Both are nervous they will let him down. Unlikely. I saw both live.

Loved Zack on MOVE. Contemporary dancers…I would swear he was a tapper, but I could be confused – excellent combinations. Not too flail-y. pulling some of their expertise from dancing with Derek and Jules. Wow. This is a tough routine with HARD lifts and tricks. Zack is kinda hot. I’ve always thought so. 🙂

Ne-Yo comments on how it was sensual but not raunchy. JLo loves them as well but didn’t care for the song – artistic choice. Derek loves the emotion, the lifts, comments that he’s not seen one of the lifts before.

Scores: 84, 84, 87 – average of 85 means they move on to the next round!! I personally thought they were better than Eva Igo. I hope they go far – loved both on MOVE last summer.

Finally up tonight, a contemporary group from Las Vegas – been looking forward to them since seeing the commercials from this week. They are dancing in tribute the the Vegas shooting. Very emotional. Some are only 11 and 12 years old. They’re killing me.

They’re message is about having hope – The Rock Company!! Expecting a lot from these babies.

Oh geez, the opening i just amazing. What do you call that?? I think of a waterfall with those movements. The little once are doing some heavy lifting. Excellent routine, although they were edited as well, which pisses me off!

JLo out there hugging them and they’re all sobbing. And now I am as well.

Derek asks what it was about – October 1st in Vegas. JLo says it was really beautiful and powerful. She’s raving. I’m kinda pissed that there was clearly more to that routine that we didn’t get to see. Derek is saying how special and powerful it was – how their foundation was so strong and how it allowed the emotion to come through even stronger. Ne-Yo agrees with Derek. Should be good scores.

Scores: 97, 97, 96 for an average of 96.7. Very excellent. I wish we could have seen the whole routine, damnnit. They are one huge puddle of joy.

Ne-Yo – I love when juniors are only junior because of their age. Truth.

Familiar faces next week too!! Like Luka and Jenalyn. The status is as follows:

Uppers – 10 acts
Upper Team – 6 teams
Juniors – 9 acts
Junior Teams – 11 teams

Weird. We could be in the qualifiers for a while, with only 6 acts a week. More likely is that we just don’t see some acts much like last year. We’ll have to wait and see!!

World of Dance Season 2! WEEK 5 Live Blog!!

Great job by Courtney last week while I was in NOLA, eh?? Let’s see what we get this week!!

Embodiment is up first – pretty sure he danced for Derek and Julianne before he got JLo but I guess that doesn’t count. Derek also used him to choreo some of his stuff….which looks somewhat similar to this routine. Same song too. Pretty sure Nappytabs choreographed the original.

Once they got past the first several bars, it was a different routine – very good. Jennifer loves it. Derek is digging it – not making any mention of his relationship with Rudy that goes beyond MOVE and into some of Derek’s own pieces. Derek and Ne-Yo both give them some solid critique.

Scores: 80, 86, and 88 (Ne-yo, Derek and Jennifer respectively) – they make it to the next round, but they need to step it up. Every Derek Hough fan out there is going to be going hey….I’ve seen something similar to that. Something new, Rudy. Read more..

‘World Of Dance’ Season 2, Week Four Qualifiers – The Performance Videos

World of Dance Season 2! WEEK 4 Live Blog!!

Heidi’s currently eating gumbo in New Orleans, so you guys get me (Court) tonight.  Bear with me as I blog, I’m used to being able to move a bit slow and just focus on the music on first viewing – so I might be a bit behind the live broadcast.  And I reserve the right to change my mind upon a 2nd viewing of these acts – there’s already been acts that I wasn’t wild about at first, but warmed up to later (Desi Hoppers) and acts I like initially but didn’t stand up to the test of time (Hilty & Bosch).

Pre-show thoughts: I’m excited to see Jonas & Ruby, who are apparently in this qualifier.  In a lot of ways, I think Ruby’s star shines a bit brighter than big brother D’Angelo’s anymore – sometimes, I think being a younger sibling that lives in the shadow of a popular older sibling can motivate kids to really push hard. I’m less enthused that Eva Igo is back – aside from my aforementioned disdain for flaily contemporary, I’m going to be pretty bored if she makes the finals again, unless she’s really taken this past year as an opportunity to grow and expand her repertoire.

First up is Jonas & Ruby.  Yasssssss 🙂

Jonas looks so much like my ex. And his name is nearly identical.

My god Ruby is such a little firecracker.   And Jonas has really come into his own.  Both of them have GREAT feet.

I kinda see what Derek is talking about with the costumes – especially the cloth on Ruby’s costume.  Kept waiting for Jonas to rip & off and do something big with it and…nothing. Chekov’s gun of dancing – don’t show me an extraneous skirt at the beginning of the dance if you aren’t going to use it by the end.

They get 85, 87, & 82 (Ne-Yo, J-Lo, Derek) for an average of 84.7 and we’ll see them in the duels.  Derek of course mentions “a ballroom couple we had last year that came out strong in the qualifier but kinda fell flat in the duels” and of course he’s referring to D’Angelo & Amanda, which Ruby points out.  Luckily, at this point, I think she’s so used to being compared to him that she shakes it off and promises to come back stronger. And I think they likely will fare better than her brother & Amanda 😉

Next up is Bradas – a hip-hop crew from New Zealand. “Brada” is kiwi slang for “brother”.  Hopefully they’re more organized than the crew from last week from the Netherlands…Ragged?

Holy crap these guys are good – so many moving parts to this routine.  They’re flipping, they’re sliding, and they’ve got this cool bank robber narrative going. They were everything that crew from last week wanted to be, but fell short on. Contender alert!

They get 85, 92, 86 for average of 87.7 and they’re headed to the duels.  I could see them getting pitted against The Ruggeds (they’ll probably spin it as an international battle) and just SLAYING.

Now we’ve got Lucas Marinetto, who is a 14-year-old tap dancer from New Orleans. (I think…I don’t know how Heidi does this, so many details to remember!) Lucas’ dad apparently didn’t always approve off his dancing, which created a rift between them that looks like it only recently healed.  Awwww.

Errr, oops – he’s from Leesburg, VA.  My bad. And he’s incredibly charismatic and dancing his ass off.  Great musicality.  He might be a bit better than Kyle from last season, even.

J-Lo is right – he really is a showman.  Poor kid seems so reserved & shy when he’s just talking, but he comes ALIVE onstage.

He gets 82, 84, & 82, for an average of 82.7.  Ne-Yo says “You’re going to the duels, you know what a duel is, right? SOMEBODY IS TRYING TO TAKE YOUR MONEY!” Lucas: “So just like school, then.” I like this kid 😉

Next up is contemporary group Expressenz from my hometown of Indianapolis. They train with weights on their legs.  HARD CORE.

Those were quite possibly the most synchronized turning sections I’ve ever seen.  It was like watching 8 clones dancing, that in-sync.

I can see what Ne-Yo & Derek are saying – the routine did feel a bit “studio recital-y”, but I agree with J-Lo that there is still room for those feel-good, pretty dances in this competition.

84, 90, 87 – they’re headed through.  I hope their choreographer can pull out something edgy – I have a gut feeling we’ll see them pitted against the Fabulous Sisters.

Now we’ve got Poreotics, who won ABDC several years ago.  And some of them stop dancing and got “real jobs”, but saw Jabbawockeez dancing last season so they decided to get the band back together again to try out.

They are doing their usual robotics, and it’s humorous and very animated – then they threw in a vogueing and waacking section and I fell in love.

Derek & Ne-Yo are kinda going in a bit hard on them –  I actually found the whole thing was pretty inventive and detailed, but Derek & Ne-Yo seemed a tad bored by it.  Luckily J-Lo is on my side with this one and loved it.

87, 90, 87 – Derek & Ne-Yo kind of sharing a brain tonight. I could see Poreotics ending up in a 3-way duel with Elektro Botz & Dragon House (another group of animators that we haven’t seen yet).

I see that they’ve saved Eva Igo for last…*sigh* *shaking head*

She’s wearing a shredded dress perfect for angsty contemporary, and doing a bunch of flexibility tricks backstage.  I’m not optimistic.

She’s flipping.  She’s pulling her leg over her head.  She’s flailing.  There she goes pulling her leg up again.  Angsty face.  Angsty face. Another acrobatic trick. Sorry….really not feeling this.  It’s nothing new or different.

But the judges are gushing and I have a feeling we may see the first perfect 100 average of WOD.  God I hope they aren’t setting this up to be “Eva’s season”.

96, 95, 94 – average of 95.  She isn’t able to best Karen y Ricardo’s score, but it’s close. Ugh.

Oh boy – they’re billing next week as “a very special episode”.  Dare I ask…?
